Research and Practice Initiative: Complementary and Integrative Health Care for Baden-Württemberg

(Forschungs- und Praxisinitiative: Komplementäre und Integrative Gesundheitsversorgung für Baden-Württemberg)

Short presentation of KIG BaWü (Prof. Dr. med. Yvonne Samstag):

Lecture on the occasion of the "Zweite Zwischenbilanz" of the Forum Gesundheitsstandort Baden -Württemberg, 23.10.2020 (in german only)

KIG BaWü (spokesperson: Prof. Dr. Yvonne Samstag) was founded in June 2020 and funded by the State Ministry for Social Affairs and Integration as part of the "Forum Gesundheitsstandort Baden-Württemberg".

To implement this research and practice initiative, the Academic Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine (AZKIM) and the Competence Network Integrative Medicine (KIM) are joining forces.

KIG BaWü would like to contribute to optimally complement conventional medicine with naturopathic and other complementary medical treatment concepts and thus to care for patients "hand in hand" in the future.

The supportive treatment of cancer, the stabilization of patients with chronic inflammatory diseases and the treatment of respiratory and urinary tract infections are important fields of application and research for the establishment of integrative medicine. Many people are affected by these disease patterns. Complementary medicine concepts can, for example, help to improve quality of life, alleviate side effects of oncological therapies and encourage the affected person to adopt a health-promoting lifestyle.

The aim of KIG BaWü is to compile the knowledge gained from experience and to research promising approaches on an interdisciplinary basis, ultimately to provide physicians and patients with concrete concepts for integrative health care. This has long been intensively demanded by patients and self-help groups. However, such a service has been largely lacking up to now.

Furthermore, with the help of new scientific methods and test procedures, the functional effects and mechanisms of action of herbal preparations, food supplements, vegan nutrition, acupuncture and relaxation procedures are to be researched. At the same time, the practical application of individual procedures will be evaluated within the framework of health care research studies. The findings will be incorporated into medical and interprofessional education, training and continuing education formats within and outside the university hospitals.

The project combines basic research with clinical research and health care research in a unique way, thus strengthening Baden-Württemberg as a research location.

AZKIM (spokesperson: Prof. Dr. Yvonne Samstag) is a supraregional association of physicians and scientists at the four university hospitals in Heidelberg (Prof. Dr. Yvonne Samstag, Immunology), Tübingen (Prof. Dr. Stefanie Joos (General Medicine and Interprofessional Care), Freiburg (Prof. Dr. Roman Huber, Internal Medicine and Naturopathy) and Ulm (Em. Prof. Dr. Thomas Simmet and Prof. Dr. Tatjana Syrovets, Clinical Pharmacology and Naturopathy).

In KIM (spokesman: Dr. Thomas Breitkreuz), renowned clinics and outpatient networks in Baden-Württemberg with experience in integrative medicine have joined forces.
